The students that will represent Lynden High School at the Northwest High School Honor Band have been invited to participate are:

Lianne Tjoelker on Tenor Saxophone
David Anderson on Trombone

The Northwest High School Honor Bands will feature music performed by approximately 200 of the finest high school musicians from Idaho, Oregon and Washington. These outstanding high school students are recommended for participation in the event by their high school band directors and the concert is a culmination of two days of intense rehearsals with guest clinicians. This year's clinicians can be found here.

Greetings music educators.

The State Board of Education is proposing a change in the High School Graduation Requirements which could have a harmful effect on students. They are proposing lowering the elective credits from 5½ to 4, which could make it more difficult for students to take music classes all four years of their high school careers.

If you are concerned, as we are, and would like to share your thoughts with decision-makers, please note the following information and act accordingly.

The most effective voices in ensuring students continue to have reasonable elective offerings are those of parents and other supporters who are from the general community. We hope that you will encourage parents and other citizens to share their concerns with those who will be making the decisions.

The State Board of Education is surveying local school board members requesting their input on this issue. Because the change would affect all areas of the curriculum, we are asking messages be broad-based and speak to individual student's needs rather than just focus on music. We feel this is a stronger argument that will have a greater chance of success, as it could benefit ALL students.

LOCAL SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS: If you or supporters of your programs were to wish to alert your school board members about the unintended consequences of this action, you might consider sending this message to them:
Because you serve on the school board, I know that you respect the individual needs of students. To this end, when you receive the State Board of Education's Graduation Requirements proposal for reducing the elective credits from 5½ to 4, we urge you to continue to meet individual student's needs by rejecting that option. Students need more, not less, flexibility in making class choices. And the electives should be the student's choice.

STATE BOARD OF EDUCATION: This message is suggested for members of the State Board of Education. Messages sent to sbe@k12.wa.us will be shared with all state board members. You can also check who the individual members of the board are and e-mail any of them directly. That information is found at www.wmea.org.

These 4 little babies are just waiting to be given to a music student. I can't wait!! It's one of my favorite things - to give fun prizes to the students.

So what is this registration drive all about? The Safeway eScrip program is our most successful fundraisers. The money we receive goes right back to the students int he form of honor band scholarships, uniforms, instruments, etc.

What do you do?

Between September 6^th – September 20^th fill out the eScrip Safeway registration log (get one from your music teacher) with your friends, family and neighbors Safeway card information. yes, you MUST include their Safeway card number NOT just their phone number.

Turn in the log to your music teacher on or before September 20^th.

For every 2 qualified* names on your log, your name will be entered in a drawing** to win 1 of 4 new 8GB iPod Nano. (see below for the fine print details)

How does eScrip work?

eScrip registers your Safeway club cards as supporters of the Lynden Music Boosters eScrip program. After the initial registration - just continue to shop at Safeway and use your grocery card or phone number as usual. Safeway will donate a percentage of what you spend to the Lynden Music Boosters through eScrip. You continue to receive all your store discounts and there’s no cost to you. eScrip donations support the students in the music programs in Lynden School District.

...and apologies for not keeping this up to date. Just to recap things a bit.

We appreciate all the letters to the school board as well as those of you who attended (and continue to attend) school board meetings. We had both good news and bad news for the music programs. Please consult the individual music teachers for details.

The Disneyland 2009 trip was a success!

The students had a wonderful time and the weather was perfect. Both, the workshop and concert were enjoyed by many.

Again a HUGE thank you to BP and James Gassman, for their $500 donation to the Music Boosters. Their continued support by honoring us with this scholarship is greatly appreciated.

This year, both middle and high school bands marched in the Farmers' Day parade.

We also got to hear the sultry sounds of the choir as they came through on their own float.

We are excited to have started the 2009/2010 school year and look forward to keeping you up-to-date on our happenings. If you are a member of Facebook, we have a group over there to continue to get the word out OF OUR ACTIVITIES.

As we all know and hear constantly, times are tough. Everyone has to cut back. On Friday, April 17th acting superintendent, Rick Thompson released his Recommended Budget Savings for 2009-10 School year to the school board and public. You can find this in it's entirety at this link.

As you could have guessed, music is one of the many organizations that are being hit. We didn't expect to be hit THIS hard. Mr. Thompson is recommending to the School Board the following:

Eliminate middle and high school choral music program
Potential savings of $ 40,000 Reduction of teacher hours by .500
Reduce elementary music specialist .2 at each building (from total of 3.0 to 2.4 FTE)
Potential savings of $43,200 Reduction of teacher hours by 0.600

What Can YOU do?

We (parents and students) let our Lynden District School Board, who ultimately make the final decision, know how we feel about this recommendation.

We, as Music Booster members can only do so much. Some of our members will be present at the public hearing and others will write letters. The rest needs to come from YOU ~ elementary school parents, middle and high school choir parents. You MUST speak out. If your students are so inclined, please have them add their voice (either by speaking at the public hearing or letter) to the school board. It would be a great testimony to them of the importance of keeping the music program intacted despite budget cuts.

Q. Why am I asked to write my check to the Lynden Music Boosters?

A. The Lynden Music Boosters has been helping the HS & MS band and choir teachers since September 2000. We are a non-profit, tax-exempt 501c(3) organization. We were re-created at first as a way to help Mr. Herrick make timely payments for travel trips (Disneyland, Silverwood, Wenatchee, etc.). Going through ASB took 4 - 6 weeks. When planning travel arrangements, that was too long to get a check out. We have expanded our scope of assistance in the purchasing of t-shirts, uniforms, purchasing fundraiser products, in addition to processing student travel deposits.

So you can imagine our surprise when we receive something like this

in the mail. In our 8 years of processing checks, this is a rare event. And we thank you. We've noticed an increase in the past year of this occurring more and more. We understand times are tough but if you know that you will be closing your checking account please send cash or a cashier's check. If it is because of financial difficulties, please feel free to discuss any financial payment problems with your students' music teacher privately. They are kept confidential.

A Band and Choir Family

When your student joins band or choir, they become more than just a band or choir member. They become a family. Especially if they have been in the same group since Middle School. They become close! They share in each other's accomplishments. They are sad when disappointments come.

Today our thoughts are with the Louws family. 2004 LHS graduate, Nate Louws was in a car accident early Saturday morning, October 11th on his way to Spokane. He has suffered a serious brain injury and he is in the ICU unit at Great Falls hospital. He is showing slow progress in his recovery. Non-registered eScrip families:

When you return to your local store anytime between September 12 and October 6, 2008 you will receive a register receipt tape. On the bottom of the receipt it will look like this:

Our receipt box, along with 3 other organizations, is located in front of the customer service desk on a table. Our box looks like this:

Frequently during the redemption period I will collect the receipts and enter them through eScrip to be posted to our account. If you would like to register you Safeway card please send an email to lyndenmusicbooster@hotmail.com with your red Safeway card number and we would be happy to process that information for you.

The yellow school bus tells you which participating products you buy that will count toward this program.

10% of the purchase price can support the school of your choice (thank you for choosing the Lynden Music Boosters) when you use your registered Club Card between August 6th - September 9th.
If you are already registered with eScrip, your 10% contribution will be automatically donated to your school. Thank you! Thank you!!
If you are not registered with eScrip, there are 2 ways your school can earn: 1) Simply give your school your Club Card number! Your eligible purchases will be stored on your card and the Lynden Music Boosters can claim the 10% rebate
OR Your cash register receipt tapes with redemption codes will start to print on Sept 12 and continue through October 6th. Turn in any one of the receipts to any band or choir student or teacher or music booster board member and we can claim the rebate. There will also be a box with the Lynden Music Boosters name on it located in front of the Customer Service desk.
We have until October 13th to claim the redemption rewards.

This year Escrip will donate an additional $1,000 to the top 200 schools/organizations with the highest redemption dollars. Let's get that additional $1,000 this year!!!

The Lynden Music Boosters would like to publicly thank Mr. James E. Gassman for recommending our organization "as one that makes a positive contribution" to his employer, BP America, Inc. To express gratitude for our efforts, BP presented us with a check for $500.

Mr. Gassman is a former band student (trumpet player). He and his wife have two children that have followed in the trumpet footsteps of their Father. The entire family are wonderful supporters of music and other art programs. Thank you for this wonderful award and donation. It is greatly appreciated and will be used to uplift and encourage our students to progress in their music aspirations.

Safeway Back to School Redemption Time!

Redemption Information and Instructions for those not registered eScrip families. Please return to your local store anytime between September 10 and October 6, 2007 to receive a register receipt. There is a blue box at the Customer Service counter to place all receipts. You may also turn receipts into your music teacher or music booster member.

Deadline is October 12th!

Registered eScrip families will receive an automatic deposit to their account via regular eScrip payment process.
